Solar energy installation and engineering instrumentation

Addressing the freshwater and energy requirements of Ramanathapuram's coastal belt has spurred significant student innovation at MSEC. A joint cohort of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering scholars recently demonstrated a low-cost, multi-stage solar desalination apparatus.

Design Methodology

The system utilizes vacuum-tube solar thermal collectors coupled with recovered waste heat, achieving over 40% thermal efficiency improvement compared to conventional single-basin stills.

Field Trials & Community Testing

Initial field trials conducted in coastal fishing settlements near Kilakarai demonstrated consistent output of potable water meeting WHO standards, with minimal maintenance overhead.
